Child Abduction is spreading like an epidemic throughout the country. More than
100,000 times each year, a human predator will attempt to abduct a child and there
are 114,600 non-family abductions reported each year, resulting in as many as 4,600
missing children.* When an abduction occurs, the incident often receives media attention.
Citizens band together to assist in the search for the missing child. Parents become
very protective of their children and impose heavy restrictions on their activities.
Unfortunately, once the shock and fury over the missing child incident settles,
some of those same parents and children revert back to their previous lifestyle
patterns until the next incident occurs.
Dexter, the Safety Dragon is a friendly, lovable
cuddly character (icon) whom children, ages 2 – 12 years will identify with,
learn from, and grow to trust.
Dexter, the Safety Dragon is an original concept
created to educate children on an ongoing basis, how to develop the skills, knowledge
and abilities needed to safeguard themselves against the potential dangers of abduction
and other safety issues.
- Promote basic safety rules for children
- Educate children and parents, alike, to be on guard against certain lure tactics,
actions and unsafe situations.
- Promote the need for consistency in the practice of child safety.
- Promote Dexter, the Safety Dragon and his message
– Always Say No! “To Strangers” via school
programs and events, media relations, advertising, promotions, personal appearances
and through the development and distribution of products bearing the Dexter, the
Safety Dragon logo. This effort is designed to generate widespread awareness to
the growing issue of child abductions, and in some cases, help to deter potential
predators from approaching children.
Disturbed by the tragic abductions that have taken place in Texas and across the
nation, Dallas parent and businesswoman Sheilah Wheeler Tucker, developed a child
abduction safety program with Dexter, the Safety Dragon, which she created along
with her daughter Kristin.
This huggable children’s character is about more than just fun and games.
Dexter has a purpose: Child Abduction Prevention. Dexter, the Safety Dragon teaches
children basic safety rules that can help prevent them from falling victim to abduction
and related dangers.
“Child abduction is a critical issue in our country. I have been blessed not
to have ever experienced the horror of losing a child first hand, but I feel a need
to try to make a difference,” Tucker says.
Dexter’s Child Abduction Prevention Program will launch in Texas with plans
for an ongoing national campaign.
